AIDS Awareness Remains Low in China
Misinformation and stigma about HIV/AIDS still pervade throughout China, according to recent research conducted by Beijing’s Renmin University and reported by Agence France-Presse.
Out of 6,000 people interviewed for a survey, 63 percent admitted they didn’t want services such as hairdressing from an HIV-positive person, and more than 41 percent said they’re unwilling to work with someone who has the virus.
According to the article, UNAIDS estimates that 700,000 HIV-positive people live in China—but the actual numbers may be 10 times higher since many cases go unreported and those infected may not get tested.
