HIV Stigma Rampant in China

HIV/AIDS stigma in China is still widespread, said United Nations officials on Wednesday, November 28 (reuters.com, 11/28).

China’s country director for the U.N. Development Program, Subinay Nandy, praised the nation for having implemented antidiscrimination policies, but said that stigma and misconceptions are stopping HIV-positive people from seeking treatment. “We all will agree, widespread stigmas and discrimination in all sections of societal life here in China as elsewhere still exist at a very high level,” he said.

There are about 650,000 people living with HIV in China, according to the United Nations.
