HIV Program Helps Lessen Stigma Among China’s Migrant Workers

China’s migrant workers are less inclined to discriminate against someone who is HIV-positive thanks to a three-year educational campaign launched by the International Labour Organization and the U.S. and China labor departments, Agence France-Presse reports.

According to the impact assessment survey released this week, 84 percent of the 250,000 workers who participated said that they had no problems working with someone who is HIV positive, compared with 40 percent who said the same thing before the campaign started in 2007.

The risk of contracting HIV is high among the country’s 140 million migrant workers because of low condom usage and high rates of illicit sexual activity.

At the end of 2008, China had 276,630 reported AIDS cases and 38,100 AIDS-related deaths. However, experts affirm that the actual figure is much higher.
