HIV Denialist Christine Maggiore Dead at 52

Christine Maggiore, a well-known HIV denialist, has died, the Los Angeles Times reports. No further details about her death have been released by the Los Angeles County coroner’s office.

Maggiore, 52, was the founder of Alive & Well AIDS Alternatives, a nonprofit group that questions whether HIV causes AIDS. It also targets HIV-positive mothers, like Maggiore, who don’t want to take meds while pregnant and who plan to breast-feed their babies (a known route of HIV transmission). She also was the author of an HIV denialist book, What If Everything You Thought You Knew About AIDS Was Wrong?

According to the article, Maggiore’s 3-year-old daughter died in 2005 of AIDS-related pneumonia, as determined by the county coroner. The county district attorney in 2006 decided not to file criminal charges of negligence against Maggiore and her husband for not having their two children tested for HIV.
