Sudan’s HIV-Positive People Lack Clean Water

HIV-positive people in Sudan are suffering from a shortage of safe, clean drinking water, IRIN/PlusNews reports (plusnews.com, 5/12).

According to the article, many people living with HIV in the war-torn country use contaminated water for drinking, bathing and cooking. “There was no other [option],” said Lole Laila Lole, chairperson of an association for people living with HIV/AIDS in southern Sudan.

Population Services International is working with the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to include water treatment tablets in the basic care packages it provides to HIV positive people in the country. Each tablet can treat 25 liters.
