NYC to Hand Out City-Branded Free Condoms for Valentine’s Day

In celebration of Valentine’s Day, the New York City Health Department will issue and distribute new NYC-branded condoms, The New York Daily News reports. In addition, the city is launching a Facebook page devoted to safe sex, where New Yorkers can order the free condoms and get instructions on using them.

According to the article, New Yorkers use Facebook more than the rest of the country, prompting city officials to use the social marketing site to further the safe-sex campaign it launched in 2007. Last year, the health department gave away about 3 million NYC-branded condoms every month.

“We encourage New Yorkers to stay safe on Valentine’s Day, and every day, by using condoms,” said Monica Sweeney, MD, the department’s assistant commissioner for HIV prevention and control.

The city of NY forcing anyone who is trying to prevent the spread of this disease is disgraceful. Any effort by any person, company or organization should be encouraged and supported. Even with all that is being done it is not enough. Hearing stories like this breaks my heart to hear. Ive been poz since 1996 and every year i feel my own mortality and hope that it stops spreading and we learn to correct all that has been infected and still alive. Good works should be rewarded, not shunned.

What a fabulous idea...supporting love and safe sex at the same time!
