Connecticut ASO Targets Women Over 50
An AIDS service organization in New Haven, Connecticut, has launched a program to address the rising numbers of HIV infections in women over the age of 50, the New Haven Register reports (nhregister.com, 4/2).
AIDS Project New Haven’s (APNH) new program, Wise Women Win, has started educating older women to be mentors and educators for other women in the community. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, people over the age of 50 made up 19 percent of new HIV diagnoses in 2005.
“There are women who are sexually active after divorce or after they are widowed. When they were married and first sexually active several decades ago, [HIV] wasn’t around,” said APNH program coordinator Nick Boshnack.
The article notes that many doctors don’t recommend HIV tests for their aging patients because of a perceived lack of risk among older people.
