HIV-Positive Malawian Women Encouraged to Grow Their Own Crops
HIV-positive Malawian women have difficulty accessing food, so a new coalition is teaching them how to grow their own crops and rear a variety of farm animals, such as chickens and goats, Voice of America News reports.
The country’s Coalition of Women Living With HIV/AIDS, with the support of ActionAid International-Malawi, was formed to address the basic needs of positive women. Traditional government policies and practices deny women the right to own farm resources, thus compromising their health and well-being. According to the article, women in Malawi of childbearing age and children younger than 5 are malnourished, which can make antiretroviral adherence difficult and hasten the progress of AIDS-related illnesses.
Women represent more than half of HIV-positive adults in the southeast African country.
