McConaughey, Leto Win Oscars for Dallas Buyers Club

Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto won at the Academy Awards for their performances in Dallas Buyers Club, the Los Angeles Times reports. McConaughey was named best actor and Leto was named best supporting actor. The film also won an Oscar for best hair and makeup.

McConaughey plays Ron Woodroof, an HIV-positive heterosexual electrician who died of AIDS-related complications in 1992 after illegally smuggling HIV drugs not approved in the United States and making them available to other people with HIV. Leto plays Rayon, a transgender woman with HIV who assists Woodroof.

The two actors have received several other honors during this awards season. They were criticized for not mentioning AIDS during their acceptance speeches at the Golden Globes, but subsequently mentioned AIDS at similar occasions. During their Oscar acceptance speeches, Leto did mention AIDS and McConaughey did not.
