Minnesota Dancers Raise Money for HIV-Positive Kids

A group of students from the University of Minnesota held a 12-hour dance-a-thon and raised $52,000 for children living with HIV, The Minnesota Daily reports. The event included help from former American Idol contestant Paris Bennett and actor Jonathan Bennett and was held at the Mall of America.

The funds will help kids go to camp One Heartland, a national nonprofit dedicated to improving the lives of HIV-positive children. Alex Yue, one of the primary organizers of the event and a chemistry student at the University of Minnesota, said about 80 percent of the kids that they raised money for can afford to go to camp.

The students exceeded the $38,000 they raised in 2008 and were determined to reach $50,000 this year, which they surpassed. Yue said the group plans to expand its involvement on campus to its Welcome Week in the fall.
