David Kato, Ugandan LGBT Activist, Beaten to Death

David Kato, an LGBT activist in Uganda, was beaten to death, BBC News reports. The police have arrested one suspect but deny there is a connection between Kato’s activism and his death. Kato and other LGBT people were outed in 2010 by the Ugandan newspaper Rolling Stone, which published their names, photographs and addresses. In November, a Ugandan court ordered the newspaper to stop outing LGBT people. Since being outed, Kato had been receiving death threats. In 2009, an “anti-homosexuality” bill was proposed with possible sentences of life in prison. Kato had campaigned against the bill. In 2010, an HIV criminalization bill was proposed with possible sentences of 10 years in prison. International pressure has so far prevented either bill from becoming law.
