Family Sues Over Death of Detained AIDS Patient

The family of Victor Arrelano, a 23-year old AIDS patient who died last month while in custody at an immigration detention center in San Pedro, California, has announced that they plan to file a wrongful death suit for lack of proper care and medical treatment for Arrelano.

Arrelano, a transgender person who used the name Victoria, had been at a detention center since May, while she waited to see if she would be sent back to Mexico.

Other detainees reported that during her last months of life, Arrelano’s physical health continued to deteriorate, but she still did not receive care or help from the center’s medical staff. According to the family’s attorney, more than 70 of the detainees signed a petition to get care for Arrelano, who was finally transferred to a hospital in San Pedro when her condition became critical, and died days later.
