Marvell Terry II of HRC in the ’End Bad HIV Laws’ campaign.

“In more than 30 states, people can be tried and imprisoned simply because a partner accuses them of hiding their HIV status. It often doesn’t matter if you used a condom or are on protective medications—or even if the accusation is false.” So states Marvell Terry II in a video campaign titled “End Bad HIV Laws” designed to raise awareness of this issue and to abolish such laws.

The campaign is a joint effort of the Human Rights Campaign (HRC), the National Center for Lesbian Rights, and the Center for HIV Law & Policy.

In the nearly three-minute video, Terry outlines five things people need to know about HIV criminalization:

    1. HIV criminal law are rooted in ignorance rather than science.

    1. Effective HIV medications make it significantly easier to treat or prevent HIV.

    1. HIV criminalization laws don’t help end the spread of HIV.

    1. There are actual, effective ways to stop the spread of HIV.

  1. You can be a part of the solution.

A related fact sheet, which you can download here, provides more details on each of the five topics.
