Free Anti-Rape Female Condoms Grab the World Cup

Thirty thousand anti-rape female condoms lined with jagged rows of teeth-like hooks that attach to a man’s penis during penetration are being distributed for free at the World Cup in South Africa, cnn.com reports. Once lodged, only a doctor can remove them. South African doctor Sonnet Ehlers says she created the Rape-aXe prophylactic to empower women, but her critics say that the device only serves as a constant reminder to women that they are vulnerable. South Africa has one of the highest rates of rape in the world.

Editor's Note: According to Mother Jones, not all of the anti-rape condoms were distributed during the World Cup because of lack of funding.

I wonder if there are any anti-rape things for guys. guys can get raped too!

Rafa61, New York, 2010-08-04 22:45:14
This tampon with hooks will cause the penis to bleed and increase the chancs of spreading HIV. What about sodomy or the women who forgets to remone te used tampon and has sex with the husband or boyfriend. They say it is free now but who will pay for this at a cost of $2.00 We need to understand what is cauing the increase in rapes first then seek ideas to reduce the horrible act. I am not condonimg this violent act.

To name a contraption a Anti-Rape-Condom is crazy. We know that rape isn't about the sexual act; it is an act of violence and domineering. Callinfg a female condom an anti rape is allowing persons to rape women usinf a condon. This instument is archaic and barbarica as the action of a rapist. We might as well castrate men and sterilize women wo rape too. This is the wring approch to deal with rapist.

Wonderful! I listened to a woman from Africa speaking about training the young girls to insert female condoms daily so that IF they are raped, at least HIV isn't transmitted. Love the teeth idea - it gets the perp where it hurts.

slongo, Texas, 2010-06-30 10:12:40
I agree with stark, any female in this sad world, no matter the age, from infant to grave, is at risk of sexual assault. The fact of having a vagina reminds me of my vulnerability all too often. Issues of "Biological inequity" (false perception of lesser value due to gender)& "Sexual Dimorphism" (the evolution of genitals- receptive vs. penetrative) will be impossible to resolve. Some women in Africa insert razor blades wrapped in cotton and/or cloth. How is this worse?

DitDatDot, Canada, 2010-06-25 16:49:12
"...the device only serves as a constant reminder to women that they are vulnerable." No, the fact that one in four women is sexually assaulted in some way is what reminds us that we're vulnerable. That I personally know two average middle class people who's drinks have been spiked with GHB is what reminds me that I'm vulnerable.

Chances are, most women who need to wear this condom area already reminded that they are vulnerable on a daily basis, so that point is moot. I second the calls for addressing the reasons why rape occurs--power, domination, sexism.

Tim Sanders, Reno, NV., 2010-06-25 12:40:15
Many of you responders do not COMPREHEND the article. Once your penis enters the condom, when you remove your penis the condom is on to stay. The teeth keep it there to be removed by a physician. If you cut it off with scissors, you still have a damaged penis. As a man who had both his mother and daughter raped in AMERICA, I would encourage any woman to wear one. Any guy who gets trapped by this devise is not going to be worrying about beating on the woman, damage control will be his concern!

Lisha, Philadelphia, 2010-06-25 11:03:36
popie, dallas why don't the women loosen up a little more? You are obviously an ignorant male. You get raped, hurt, terrorized and humiliated, or live with a constant fear of this happening to you, and then YOU loosen up.

cdh, , 2010-06-25 10:43:37
how about if a man tries to rape a woman wearing it, gets hurts and then becomes enraged and roughs her up even more...or sodomizes her. this could be a bad thing.

popie, dallas, 2010-06-25 05:32:14
why don't the women loosen up a little more?

Wiley, , 2010-06-25 00:05:00
Any idiot can take that thing off despite the inventor's claim. Just carry some pointed scissors along with you and cut it. In fact, I don't see any way that the thin latex condom will keep you from walking, although you might look funny doing it. This is all a publicity stunt.

a lady, Houston, 2010-06-24 19:41:52
I think that this violent approach to condoms is going to backfire in a major way. (1) The condom is soft and pliable. This means that a more sadistic rapist could flip the RapeX inside out and cause harm to a victim. (2) A sadistic woman/ex-girlfriend could use RapeX on an innocent victim. Imagine a sick young lady seducing someone while wearing a RapeX in order to cause harm to the person she is upset with/mad at/obsessed with.

mollination, , 2010-06-24 17:44:01
I guarantee if a guy got caught a couple times and those stories got out, it would be enough to at least decrease rape-rates in that area. A "think twice" sort of cause and effect. And it's a woman's right to choose to buy this item, so the detractor's comment just sounds like unneccessary noise at that point.

gen, LA, CA, USA, 2010-06-24 17:02:24
This is a first step. Now how about focusing on men & giving them education & counsling & such? And who are the condoms opposition? Men? Rapists?
