Florida AIDS Clinic Closes After 10 Years

Some HIV-positive people in Florida have been forced to go elsewhere, or to multiple outlets, to receive treatment after the University of Miami’s Project Outreach center closed on October 31 (miamiherald.com, 11/6).

The clinic, which opened about 10 years ago, closed because there weren’t enough patients seeking treatment there, according to Dr. Michael Kolber, director of the university’s Comprehensive AIDS program.

A review of the center found that about 100 people were going to the clinic on a continuous basis—well short of the 300 to 400 needed for the clinic to remain open, Kolber said. Since it closed, some of the clinic’s former patients have been struggling to find other ways to receive treatment and care.
