The Florida Department of Health’s Bureau of HIV/AIDS has launched a statewide text-messaging service to encourage residents to get tested for HIV, the Westside Gazette reports (thewestsidegazette.com, 4/9).
Florida residents can send their zip codes to “46246” to receive information on the nearest HIV testing center. The service is free, though standard text-messaging fees apply.
The texting service is part of the HIV/AIDS Bureau’s We Make the Change program, an initiative designed to increase awareness among Floridians about HIV, particularly its impact on the state’s minority communities. According to the article, Florida had the third-highest number of AIDS cases in the country last year.
