L.A. Food Pantry Loses Crucial Grant
The only food pantry for HIV-positive people in Los Angeles’ South Bay region lost a $10,000 corporate funding grant earlier this month. Now Amigos sin Barreras’ (Friends Without Borders) Circle of Life pantry, which serves about 400 low-income people living with HIV, may have to restrict or even cancel vital services as the winter and holiday seasons approach.
The center provides HIV-positive people with food, vitamins and other supplements two Wednesdays and two Saturdays a month.
"We need the community's help more than ever now," said Alma Martinez, who founded Amigos sin Barreras 14 years ago. The organization, which is based in Redondo Beach, CA, also provides holistic healing resources, including acupuncture and yoga.
