Blown Sideways

by Scott Wald

Perhaps from the folks who brought us such curious medical euphemisms as “partially pregnant” and “totally cured,” we have “full-blown AIDS.” Although the term may seem outdated in this protease era of AIDS as a “manageable disease,” the condition has a very precise clinical definition. The Centers for Disease Control defines having AIDS, as opposed to living with HIV, as requiring a CD4 count under 200 and/or one or more opportunistic infections. Confused? Consider the scene from the Fox Family Guy episode “The Cleveland-Loretta Quagmire” (familyguy.com), in which a barbershop quartet delivers the diagnosis.
