Unprotected Sex and HIV Among Gay and Bisexual Men
In two new U.S. studies, more than one third of surveyed men who identified as gay or bisexual and are aware that they are HIV positive said they had recently engaged in unprotected sexual intercourse (forbes.com, 12/3).
Many of the men reported that they’d engaged in unprotected sex with men who they knew were also HIV positive; others said that they had unprotected intercourse with at least one partner whose status they didn’t know, or whom they knew to be HIV negative.
Researchers found that unprotected sex was often linked to the use of recreational drugs, including methamphetamine, and that the likelihood of unprotected sex was 60 percent higher among younger men than older men.
