April 2008

Eco Chamber

by James Wortman

The new celebrity, green-ribbon cause—global warming and the environment—might seem to have little to do with AIDS advocacy. But just in time for Earth Day (April 22), an eco-friendly housing facility serving HIV-positive people has opened in Oakland, California. The Crossroads shelter houses 125 homeless people—about 20 percent of whom are HIV positive. It offers comprehensive counseling and medical care while reducing environmental stresses through hydronic heating, a solar-paneled roof, operable windows and furniture made from toxin-free pressed wheat.

Says founder Wendy Jackson: “This is about helping people live in harmony with themselves and with the environment.” Learn more at eocp.net.
