Rep. Waxman, Lead Author of Ryan White CARE Act, to Retire

U.S. Representative Henry Waxman (D–Calif.) has announced that he will retire from Congress at the end of 2014, The New York Times reports. He cited his frustration with the current partisanship and ineffectiveness of Congress as the reason. In his 40 years in the House of Representatives, Waxman authored several major pieces of legislation. He wrote much of the Affordable Care Act (a.k.a. the health care reform law, or ACA) of 2010. He was involved in writing many health-related laws, such as health insurance for low-income children, as well as anti-tobacco, food safety and food-labeling laws. Waxman was the lead author of the Ryan White CARE Act of 1990, which provides billions of federal dollars each year to support people with HIV/AIDS nationwide.
