Traditional Herbalists in Ghana Search for AIDS Cure

A leading health official in Ghana has said that the Ghana AIDS Commission (GAC) is open to herbal practicitioners who are working to find a cure for HIV/AIDS, reports weekly newspaper PublicAgenda/AllAfrica.com (allafrica.com, 2/15).

Professor F.T. Sai, Ghana’s presidential advisor on reproductive health, HIV/AIDS, said that the commission only has problems with “quack” practitioners who provide false claims about potential cures.

“Imagine an herbalist who can tell you that he uses the urine of an individual to determine whether the person is cured or not,” Sai reportedly said in advance of the 2nd National HIV/AIDS Research Conference which will take place this March in Accra, Ghana. “It [is] just unrealistic.” However, he went on to say that the GAC would fund and support credible herbalists who have research to back up their claims.
