Health officials in Scotland fear that the renewed popularity and availability of intravenous drugs such as heroin may increase HIV rates. They blame the surge on increased mobility within Europe and an international heroin trade fuelled by the conflict in Afghanistan—where the HIV infection has increased fourfold in the last six months.
