HIV prevalence among heterosexuals in U.S. inner cities is 2.1 percent, according to a study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and reported by The Wall Street Journal. As defined by the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), the threshold for a generalized HIV epidemic in a given population is 1 percent. This study provides the strongest evidence yet of a link between HIV rates and poverty, the CDC researchers said. Seventy-five percent of the HIV-positive study participants lived at or below the poverty line.
