Letter Urges HHS to Speed Up Gay Blood Ban Reevaluation
A letter from 86 members of Congress was sent to the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Kathleen Sebelius urging her to accelerate the reevaluation of the HHS lifetime ban on blood donations from men who have sex with men, Metro Weekly reports. Among the signers were U.S. Senators Tammy Baldwin (D–Wis.) and Elizabeth Warren (D–Mass.) and U.S. Representatives Mike Quigley (D–Ill.) and Barbara Lee (D–Calif.). Senator Mike Enzi (R–Wyo.) was the only Republican to sign the letter. The American Medical Association passed a resolution in June opposing the lifetime ban.
