Fighting HIV and Addiction in Detroit
Dr. Calvin Trent and his team at the Bureau of Substance Abuse Prevention and the Detroit Department of Health and Wellness Promotion are tackling HIV and drug abuse simultaneously as a linked epidemic, news magazine Between the Lines/PrideSource.com reports (pridesource.com, 3/6).
“We can better address the issue of HIV if it’s linked to substance abuse,” Trent told Between the Lines. “It’s my job to see that we address these issues and reduce the incidences and prevalence of HIV and substance abuse in our community. That’s our first concern.”
According to the article, Trent’s program provides AIDS and substance abuse services to Detroit and six surrounding counties—including Oakland, Wayne and Macomb—emphasizing street outreach, drug-addiction programs, HIV health care and counseling.
On March 17 through 20, the Substance Abuse Prevention program will hold a conference to reiterate its primary goals and educate church and community leaders about abuse and to unite Detroit’s at-risk groups—such as African Americans and the Lesbian, Gay Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) community—to fight HIV and addiction to better remedy these linked crises.
