International Health Group Helps HIV-Positive People in Myanmar

In an interview with Joe Belliveau, Médecins Sans Frontières’ (Doctors Without Borders) operation manager for Myanmar, Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera (corriere.it, 5/9) reports that the organization has worked to help people in Myanmar who are living with HIV and who lost access to antiretroviral treatment in the devastating cyclone earlier this month.

“Our five clinics in Yangon were damaged, but we were still able to restart our programs almost immediately while carrying out repairs,” Belliveau said in the interview. “A few dozen of our HIV/AIDS patients also lost their antiretroviral treatment in the cyclone. We have been able to resupply all of them.”

Belliveau also says that the most pressing needs for people in the country, including people living with HIV, are securing food, drinking water, shelter and care.
