Boy With HIV Settles Hershey School Suit for $715,000

A $715,000 settlement has been reached in the case of a boy who was denied admission to the Milton Hershey School because he has HIV, according to a statement by the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ). The DOJ and the AIDS Law Project of Pennsylvania reached the settlement to remedy allegations the school had violated the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), which covers people with HIV. The school must pay $700,000 to the boy, as well as a $15,000 civil penalty to the United States. The school must also adopt and enforce a policy prohibiting discrimination, require equal opportunity for students with disabilities, and train staff on ADA requirements.
