A record high of 435 new HIV infections were reported in Hong Kong in 2008, bringing the city’s total number of people who have tested positive since 1984 to 4,047, the Xinhua News Agency reports.

According to the article, Wong Ka-hing, a consultant with the city’s Center for Health Protection, said that sexual transmission is still the major mode of spreading the virus. Out of last year’s cases, 131 were attributed to heterosexual exposure and 145 to bisexual or same-sex contact. Three cases were due to blood or blood product infusion, while 40 cases were linked to intravenous drug use. The routes of transmission for the remaining 116 new cases were undetermined.
