Legal Struggle to End Soon for HIV-Positive Nairobi Woman

A waitress in Nairobi, who was fired in 2002 after her employer learned of her HIV status, will soon receive an out-of-court settlement following a court ruling, The East African Standard/AllAfrica.com reports (allafrica.com, 2/14).

The woman, identified only as JAO in the suit, claims that her doctor told her employer of her HIV status without her consent. The woman was terminated immediately despite being employed at Homepark Catering Services at Metropolitan Hospital in Nairobi for eight years.

Although she is currently unable to leave her rural Nyanza home due to post-election violence, the Standard reports that JAO’s case came before a judge on Wednesday, February 13. The judge is reportedly giving the catering company until March 10 to reach a settlement.
