California Groups Hope to Unite Local Neuropathy Community

With 2 million California residents living with neuropathy—a nerve condition common in HIV-positive people—various chapters of the state’s Neuropathy Association hope to raise awareness about the disorder, the San Jose Mercury News reports.

According to the article, neuropathy is any disease of the nervous system, including peripheral neuropathy, which is a deranged function and structure of peripheral sensory, motor and atomic neurons. HIV, diabetes, certain surgeries and medications, and heredity are some of the more than 100 known causes of the disease.

The Santa Cruz Chapter anticipates that holding an informational meeting about the disorder will help unite the local neuropathy community. “It’s a chance to see if there’s enough folks to keep a support group going,” said Mary Ann Leer, the support group leader of the Santa Cruz Chapter. “It could be the beginning.”
