New HIV Infections Drop in New Zealand

According to the New Zealand Press Association/The New Zealand Herald, 156 new HIV cases were reported in the country in 2007, down from 177 in 2006 (nzherald.co.nz, 3/17).

The country’s AIDS Epidemiology Group says the sharpest decline was among heterosexual men and women. Although new infections among the country’s men who have sex with men are also lower than they were in 2006, the article notes that officials remain concerned.

“Though we are pleased there has not been an increase, it is unfortunate that we have not seen a further reduction this year,” says Eamonn Smythe, executive director of the New Zealand AIDS Foundation. "These numbers are still equivalent to one new diagnosis every five days."

"I'm HIV positive and diabetic (as well as have high cholesterol) and some of my meds specify taking them with 'high fat foods' which I have to do twice a day. I've eaten as healthy as possible, but when it comes to high fat foods, I am in a quandary...about what to eat sometimes..."
