HIV Risk for Nearly 700 Dialysis Center Patients
Nearly 700 patients at New York City’s Life Care Dialysis Center were notified by officials from the city’s health department to get tested for HIV and hepatitis B and C after an inspection of the facility revealed poor infection control practices, WCBS reports.
At least one of the center’s patients is known to have contracted hepatitis C while undergoing treatment. Nearly 200 patients were forced to transfer to other centers to continue their dialysis treatment.
Following a week-long inspection of the facility, officials found “blood on the treatment chairs and dialysis machines, lack of proper hand hygiene and inadequate disinfection of equipment,” according to the article.
Officials urge anyone treated at the center any time after January 23, 2004, to get tested for blood-borne infection.
