Conference Addresses HIV Among Pittsburgh’s Youth

A recent conference held in downtown Pittsburgh spread HIV/AIDS awareness among hundreds of local youth, local news station WTAE Channel 4 reports (thepittsburghchannel.com, 3/25).

Pittsburgh’s Eighth AIDS Conference featured poetry and dance performances, as well as informational speeches by local health officials, including Pennsylvania Secretary of Health Dr. Calvin Johnson. He expressed concern over the domestic rise in HIV infection among people under the age of 25.

“HIV infection can take up to 10 years to manifest itself,” said Johnson, who said that many teenagers who contract HIV don’t find out their status until many years later.
