Coinfection with HIV and tuberculosis (TB) results in poor medical outcomes in Eastern Europe, according to a study published in the November 27 issue of AIDS and reported by aidsmap. TB is the leading cause of illness and death in people with HIV worldwide.

The study included Argentina and countries throughout Europe. Patients in Eastern Europe were most likely to have multidrug resistant TB, to receive poorer TB treatment and to die.

“This public health disaster should be a call to action against inappropriate medical management of TB, a country-specific problem with global implications,” wrote the authors of the study in an editorial.
