In anticipation of World Tuberculosis Day, March 24, researchers from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, centered in Maryland, and the University of KwaZulu-Natal in Durban, South Africa, announced a $60 million project devoted to the link between HIV and tuberculosis, The Boston Globe reports.

According to the article, the initiative includes building a $20 million research center in Durban that will focus on drug-resistant TB among HIV-positive people. The other $40 million will fund research, training and treatment programs during the next 10 years. The center will also study complications in diagnosing TB among HIV patients in addition to genetic factors that may influence drug resistance.
