Vietnam Launches Nationwide HIV Prevention Campaign

Vietnam’s Ministry of Health is urging all of its citizens to participate in an HIV/AIDS campaign, the Vietnam News Agency reports.

The movement—titled Every Citizen Is Involved in HIV/AIDS Control and Prevention Activities at Community Level—launched October 6 and will run through the year 2012. It includes a variety of activities to raise the country’s awareness about HIV/AIDS control and prevention while educating families, HIV-positive people, commercial sex workers and injection drug users on various ways they can protect themselves against the virus.

According to the ministry, 40,000 AIDS-related deaths have been recorded in the country since the beginning of the epidemic. Currently, 132,000 Vietnamese are HIV positive and 27,500 have AIDS.
