Making Awareness Job No. 1

According to a new report by the United Nations International Labor Organization (ILO), successful workplace HIV policies in several countries have led to more supportive attitudes toward people living with HIV, the UN News Service/AllAfrica.com reports (allafrica.com, 4/15).

“With 33.2 million people globally living with HIV, the majority of whom are still working and in their most productive years, the workplace is a unique entry point in addressing HIV/AIDS,” the agency announced. The report included data over the last four years from six pilot countries—Belize, Benin, Cambodia, Ghana, Guyana and Togo. It found “a marked improvement” in attitudes toward HIV-positive people in all six countries.

The report also found improved attitudes toward condom use and higher rates of actual condom usage in most of the pilot countries.
