President Obama has signed into law the HIV Organ Policy Equity (HOPE) Act, according to a White House statement. The bipartisan legislation allows scientists to research organ donations between people with HIV. Previously, it was illegal not only to conduct these transplants, but also to study their safety and effectiveness. The HOPE Act lifts the research ban, which could lead to organ transplants between people with HIV. Such transplants would free up organs for HIV-negative people.
