A federal judge has ruled that two New York City realtors discriminated against people with AIDS because they received housing subsidies, according to a Housing Works statement. U.S. District Court Judge Samuel Conti found that Manhattan Apartments Inc. and Abba Realty Inc. refused to assist Keith Short and other people with AIDS because they received rental assistance from the New York City HIV/AIDS Services Administration (HASA). In 2008, the City Council passed a law prohibiting landlords and their agents from discriminating against people with lawful sources of income, such as HASA subsidies. This ruling is the first under the law on behalf of a HASA client.
