Housing Works Sells Banksy Painting for $615,000
The British artist Banksy donated one of his works to Housing Works, which the New York City–based HIV/AIDS group sold for $615,000 at an online auction, Bloomberg reports. “The Banality of the Banality of Evil” depicts a man in a Nazi uniform sitting on a bench looking out at a lake and mountains. He created the work by purchasing an oil-on-canvas painting for $50 at a Housing Works thrift shop. He then added the Nazi figure and his signature. Best known for his graffiti-inspired art, Banksy spent the month of October in New York City in “residency” creating mostly outdoor works.
