Effective April 26, Humberto Cruz will retire as director of the New York State Department of Health AIDS Institute, according to the Housing Works blog. He has been with the organization since 1989. Cruz has received much recognition over the years for his efforts, including an appointment to the Presidential Advisory Council on HIV/AIDS in 2010 and the Dennis de Leon Voz de Compromiso Award from the Latino Commission on AIDS in 2011. Dan O’Connell, deputy director for HIV, STD and HCV prevention and epidemiology at the AIDS Institute, will take over as acting director when Cruz retires.
