Iggy Azalea, Sam Smith Headline MTV Benefit for HIV Group Lifebeat

They’re so fancy! Music industry all-stars Iggy Azalea and Sam Smith will headline an MTV Video Music Awards concert on Friday, August 22, to benefit Lifebeat—Music Fights HIV/AIDS, a nationwide nonprofit that helps educate young people about HIV prevention, Yahoo News reports.

The event will take place at the Avalon in Los Angeles as a lead-up to Sunday night’s televised awards show. In the weeks leading up to the VMA benefit, Time Warner Cable and Lifebeat have been hosting free ticket giveaways for Southern California residents to attend the highly anticipated concert.

For those unfamiliar with the artists: Iggy Azalea was nominated in 2013 for the “MTV Artist to Watch” Award and is set to make her VMA debut performance on Sunday night. This year, she’s gotten seven VMA nods, including “Video of the Year,” “Best Pop Video,” and “Best Collaboration” for her chart-topping hit, Fancy. U.K. artist Sam Smith has been nominated for this year’s “Artist to Watch” Award after huge success with his debut album, In the Lonely Hour, and is also a contender in the VMA’s “Best Male Video” category.

The annual Lifebeat benefit pre-show has become a major staple in the lead-up to the VMAs. Besides benefitting HIV prevention and awareness programs, the concert is also famous for featuring up-and-coming artists. Previous headliners have included Macklemore, Robin Thicke, the Beastie Boys and Maroon 5.
