Radio Awareness in India

Radio disc jockeys in India are receiving HIV/AIDS sensitivity and awareness training to inform their on air commentary about the virus. The training is part of a new campaign by Radio Mirchi, a popular station out of the southeast city of Chennai, as well as the Heroes Project, an HIV/AIDS public service campaign co-founded by Richard Gere and the Satyam Foundation, a California-based global communications nonprofit.

The campaign organizers hope to fight against stigma in the country, where approximately 2.5 million people are HIV positive, by broadcasting radio messages about discrimination, care and support of people living with HIV. Celebrities are also being incorporated into the campaign by way of a daily celebrity quiz on HIV and AIDS, which hopes to dispel myths about the virus.

Listeners are also given a helpline they can call for more information or referral services.
