India’s Testing Kits Called Into Question

The World Bank is planning to investigate India’s HIV testing operations after one doctor discovered that the testing kits currently being used might be defective. (washintonpost.com, 10/13).

Dr. Kunal Saha from the US found documents from 2004 and 2005 that suggest that India’s testing kits may have produced an alarming number of false positives. Saha says that the kits in question may have been used as recently as six months ago.

The World Bank will hire two independent consultants to investigate India’s HIV testing kit program, but it has not revealed when those hirings will take place. Saha disagrees with the World Bank’s actions, suggesting that health officials issue a wide-scale public health alert instead.
