Indianapolis Walgreens Specializes in HIV Care

Walgreens stores across the country specialize in services for those with cancer, rheumatoid arthritis and respiratory problems, but an Indianapolis branch is reaching out to a new market: residents with HIV, The Indianapolis Star reports.

To address the pharmaceutical needs of HIV-positive customers, all of the pharmacists at the downtown Indianapolis branch have specialty training in HIV/AIDS. Patients can now receive detailed knowledge of their HIV medication and assistance in figuring out how to pay for a regimen that could cost up to $3,000 a month.

“The need is there. It’s just simple,” said Bruce Gasaway, Walgreens’ HIV/AIDS market specialist for the Midwest region. “There’s a demand in the market from patients who want to have the convenience of Walgreens and the expertise in their disease state.”

Almost 8,000 people live with the virus in Indiana, according to the state’s health department.

Madison has had two such specialty Walgreens for at least two years. I use the one on E. Washington, across from the deli with the merry-go-round. Greg & his team have been excellent at helping me. This is also the pharmacy adjacent to the PWA housing so I'm sure they get a lot of business. Thanks to Walgreens for putting resources into this effort to help us.
