Indonesia’s HIV Cases Triple Since 2005
HIV cases in Indonesia are three times higher than they were in 2005, said Nafsiah Mboi, head of the Southeast Asian country’s AIDS commission, as reported by Agence France-Presse. The number of diagnoses grew from 9,565 in 2005 to 26,632 in March of this year.
According to the article, Mboi believes the actual number of HIV-positive Indonesians is likely much higher—and she estimates that 85 percent of them are unaware of their status.
“The number of infections is increasing, and it’s worrying,” Mboi said.
Representatives from more than 60 countries around Asia and the Pacific will convene in August in Bali to discuss a joint plan to prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS.
