Bill Would Lower HIV Criminal Penalties in Iowa

A bill in Iowa would decrease the criminal penalties faced by people with HIV, KCCI News reports. The proposed legislation by State Senator Matt McCoy (D–Des Moines) would lower the current maximum penalty of 25 years in prison to five years if a person with HIV were convicted of not disclosing his or her status to a partner, regardless of whether transmission occurs. Anyone who intentionally transmits the virus could face a penalty of up to $7,500. The legislation is supposed to go soon to a subcommittee.
