Iran Fights Rise in Sexually Transmitted HIV
Iran has launched a hotline to offer free consultation services to intravenous drug users and individuals who participate in high-risk sexual activities, Reuters reports.
“In recent years, the incidence of AIDS virus contraction through sexual contact has increased,” said Abbas Sedaghat, who heads the Health Ministry AIDS office. “There are indications that the AIDS contraction model in Iran is changing from shared syringes toward sexual contacts.”
The Islamic state is on a heroin smuggling route to the West from Afghanistan, the world’s No. 1 opium poppy producer. Authorities are distributing free syringes, offering HIV education and urging drug addicts to seek treatment.
