Ireland’s HIV Prevalence Rises in 2007
Ireland’s Health Protection Surveillance Centre (HPSC) found that HIV infections in the country rose 21 percent during the first half of 2007, The Irish Times/Ireland.com reports (Ireland.com, 2/26). The majority of these new cases were among heterosexuals.
According to the article, 204 people in Ireland were diagnosed with HIV in the first six months of 2007 compared with 337 cases for all of 2006. Heterosexual contact accounted for 53 percent of the cases, while the remaining new infections were among injection-drug users and men who have sex with men (MSM).
“The rise in diagnoses of HIV is of serious concern,” says Mary O’Shea, executive director of Dublin AIDS Alliance (DAA). “The figures show that more work is required in developing sexual health and prevention strategies nationally.”
